Mission Statement

The Public Works Department provides, operates, and maintains the essential infrastructure and services that ensure a safe and convenient environment for Fort Bragg’s residents, businesses, and visitors. The Department’s core responsibilities encompass a wide range of municipal services, including mapping, inspection, and the management of capital projects. Key operations include the maintenance of City-owned facilities, parks, and streetscapes, as well as the management of water intake, treatment, and distribution. Additionally, the Department ensures environmental compliance through the implementation of organic food waste diversion (SB 1383) and storm water runoff management (NPDES), alongside the reliable collection and treatment of wastewater.

The Public Works Department operates through six specialized divisions: Administration/Engineering, Parks & Facilities, Corporation Yard & Fleet, Street Maintenance, Water Enterprise, and Wastewater Enterprise.

The Administration and Engineering Division provides essential fiscal management and technical support, overseeing the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and maintaining regulatory permit compliance. Parks & Facilities manages the upkeep of City buildings, grounds, and street trees, while the Corporation Yard & Fleet Division handles street maintenance—including signage and striping—and the repair of critical utility infrastructure like water meters and fire hydrants. Our field crews remain on-call for emergency repairs, such as water leaks and sewage overflows, and provide vital support for civic events. Notably, the Water and Wastewater Enterprises are managed as distinct funds and are detailed in their own sections of this budget. To better meet community needs, the Department recently expanded its expertise to include housing and environmental review capabilities.

Reporting an Activity/Incident Involving Pollution

To report an activity/incident involving pollution (oil, wastewater, litter, sediment, or any unknown material) entering the gutter or storm drain inlet, please call the Fort Bragg Police Department at 707-964-0200 as soon as possible and be ready to provide your contact information, date of the incident / activity, address or location of the activity, and a description of the pollution activity you are reporting. Preventing Pollution

Timely reliable information is necessary to predict the timing and location where dumped materials will re-emerge which provides an opportunity to apprehend the materials (and/or suspects) and thereby minimize the extent to which pollution of the storm drain inlets affects aquatic ecosystems in Pudding Creek, Noyo River, coastal wetlands, and the Pacific Ocean.
