ONEKA SEAWATER DESALINATION BUOY PILOT STUDY
The City of Fort Bragg has a Draft Initial Study (IS) and Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND), which is being distributed for public review, pursuant to the California Public Resources Code and the California Environmental Quality Act Guidelines (CEQA Guidelines). Additionally, The Fort Bragg Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on the project under review in the IS/MND at a regularly scheduled meeting held Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 6:00 PM or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard at Town Hall, at the corner of Main and Laurel Streets (363 North Main St.), Fort Bragg, California. The public hearing and IS/MND will concern a proposal to deploy a single Iceberg buoy offshore of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. This deployment will test the buoy and its new technology to produce and deliver desalinated water without the need for electricity from shore. The pilot project will allow for the collection of empirical data from within California waters that could be used to inform design and permitting of a future, utility scale deployment.
